Pet Odor Neutralizer

We love our pets. But let’s face it—they stink! It can be tricky to get the odor out of carpets and furniture without damaging them with strong chemicals. But there is a natural solution!petspray

Apple cider vinegar is a great cleaning agent if you are environmentally conscious. Its antibacterial properties make it a natural alternative to bleach. Using apple cider vinegar instead of bleach to clean will eliminate the strong chemical smell and prevent ruining your carpet and upholstery. Once the vinegar solution evaporates, only a sweet and slightly floral scent remains with no fumes!

Pet Odor Neutralizer

  • Servings: Yield=1 cup (240 ml)
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Print

Ingredients:

  • 10–20 drops essential oil of choice (We suggest geranium, lavender, and lemon as a great blend.)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) apple cider vinegar
  • 8 oz. Glass Spray Bottle

Instructions:

  1. Add 10–20 drops of essential oil to a small spray bottle filled with apple cider vinegar.
  2. Shake well before each use, and spray on the smelly surfaces. Let the Pet Odor Neutralizer dry and take the odor away.

Essential Oil Spotlight: Basil

Fresh green basil on the wooden table, selective focus

Basil essential oil is steam-distilled from the leaves, stem, and flower of the Ocimum basilicum plant of the mint family.

Historically, basil was used for respiratory and digestive problems as well as poisonous snake and insect bites, fever, and malaria. Basil was considered by the Greeks to be “the king of plants” and was used to anoint kings. Hindus placed sprigs of basil on their deceased to ward off evil, and in Italy it was used as an aphrodisiac.

The French use basil for migraines, gallbladder and liver problems, and mental fatigue.

Basil supports the cardiovascular system as well as muscles and bones. It may be used for aches and pains, bronchitis, anxiety, intestinal problems, snake bites, and insomnia.

When used aromatically, it is said to open the mind and increase clarity of thought. It can also be used topically and in cooking.

See the Reference Guide for Essential Oils to learn more about basil essential oil and many other pure essential oils.

Microwave Steam Cleaner

One of the easiest ways to clean out a grimy microwave oven is to create a cleansing steam using vinegar, water, and lemon essential oil.  Lemon essential oil is known for its antibacterial properties and will leave your kitchen smelling lovely. This recipe makes it so easy to clean your microwave that it might just become your favorite part of your cleaning routine.

Microwave Steam Cleaner

  • Servings: Yield=2 cups
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Print

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup vinegar
  • 5 drops lemon essential oil

Instructions:

  1. In a glass measuring cup, combine the water, vinegar, and essential oil.
  2. Put the cup in the microwave.
  3. Microwave the mixture for 5 minutes. Let it sit in the microwave for another 2–5 minutes to allow the steam to work through the grime and food particles inside of your microwave.
  4. Carefully remove the cup from the microwave; the glass will be hot, and sometimes the water has been known to explode because of a shift in the molecules. This can be avoided by putting a wooden spoon or bamboo skewer in the liquid while you heat it up.
  5. Once you have removed the measuring cup, use a clean sponge to wipe down the sides of the microwave. The build-up comes off like a dream!
